It levels like a factory finish, the XIM primer is a bit harsh as it is a solvent base, and not always necessary. The Advance can go over that primer as well. Love your transformation pics! Thanks for the info, Rebecca! The Stix primer is also a good option, it is a bonding primer acrylic-urethane made by Insl-x which is part of Benjamin Moore, and water-based. Thanks for the informative posts! I used this advice and used the Stix primer on thermofoil cabinets, followed by 2 coats of a stain enamel paint.
It has not been the 30 days, but even just the slightest touch will scratch the gray off these cabinets. Now that all other work on this house is done we are selling , I am going to redo a few of them, and we will be able to wait the 30 days before closing before anyone else touches them. Will the combo of The Stix and satin enamel actually workout and be durable?
Or should I have used the more heavy duty XIM? Or should I add some sort of a top coat to add some protection? Her house looks beautiful!
Great job. We painted our melamine cabinets 11 years ago and other than a few scratches in the paint, they still look great. I love the 2-toned look for the cabinets. Laila, 11 years ago? Brave, no, more like desperate! We are going to look into refacing the cabinets soon. Kristie, once again, you worked your magic-it looks fantastic-so happy forAllison and her family!
The whole house transformation that we have seen thus far is Fabulous! Glad to know that the every day people like me with YOU can transform a home without having a ton of money.
You both have done a great job! The project is taking a long time because I work during the day and have various other things I attend in the evening. But it is looking great so far. Looks great! I have been laboring over the thought of painting my bathroom cabinets made of the same materials. More confident now. Can you identify the exact type of paint roller and cover the painter used? I must say, that I would recommend a professional do this job.
Especially if you ever intend to re-sell. DIY is awesome and all that, but there are certain things that are best left to the professional. Bathroom cabinets? I might take a chance there, but NOT kitchen cabinets. What a transformation!
I love what you did with this house. My husband was skeptic that it would work, to be honest, I was skeptic too. I thought I had nothing to loose, we will soon change the bathrooms anyway soon. I think my favorite thing in the kitchen is how much bigger the window over the sink looks. I think the photography angle might be playing it up a tad, but switching out the dark red on either side of the window for the lighter color made a huge difference.
The window looks so much wider than before. As part of our kitchen cabinet painting series, we wanted to make sure we included a tutorial on how to paint melamine cabinets. People are often apprehensive about painting kitchen cabinets, period. Ikea kitchen cabinets are popular for their modern look at a great pricepoint but often, people are disappointed by their limited color range. We have a great solution for you today! We are going to teach you how to update your Ikea kitchen cabinets that are melamine with Fusion Mineral Paint.
We want to put your mind at ease and assure you that with Fusion Mineral Paint, you absolutely, positively, can paint melamine, laminate and other unusual surfaces like metal and mirrors.
Step 1 — PREP! You know it by now. Prep and clean your surfaces before a drop of paint goes near them. We used our TSP to give the cabinet a good cleaning. You want to make sure that your cabinets are free of any dust, dirt, foodstuff if you are painting an older kitchen or anything else that could compromise the surface of your cabinets. When painting melamine, it is a good idea to apply a thin layer of Ultra Grip to your melamine cabinets.
Just add a very thin layer using a sponge. Allow the Ultra Grip to dry for 12 hours before you start painting.
If you are painting any furniture, I would highly suggest using these for a smoother paint finish. Zinsser B-I-N feels quite thin when you apply it, but it starts to thicken and really sticks very very quickly. If you find it too thin at first, pour some in a paint tray and leave it for 5 or 10 minutes for a thicker application. I left 24 hours between each application. I then applied two coats of eggshell over the B-I-N and that was the wardrobes done! I think they blend in so much better now they are the same colour as the walls and so far so good - they do not look like they will chip at all!
I wish I had painted them sooner! Please note that this post does contain some affiliate links. Sep 16, Aug 11, If you open windows to ventilate, make sure the temperature and humidity levels in the work area stay within the manufacturer's recommended ranges. Let the final coat cure fully for two to three weeks before placing any heavy objects on it or scrubbing the surface vigorously. You do not need to ventilate the area during this period.
You can use the surface gently and only clean it with a damp cloth. If you don't wait for the full duration, small appliances and items stored on top can stick to the paint or mar the surface finish.
When refinishing laminate or melamine counters, instead of paint, consider an all-in-one countertop resurfacing system, such as Rust-Oleum's Countertop Transformations. The benefit of these kits is that they are formulated to cover up scratched or dinged countertops by laying down a thick topcoat that securely adheres to a primer coat.
These systems go beyond paint; they spread a solid layer of decorative rock chips, adhesive coating, and tints that work together to emulate stone surfacing like granite countertops when done.
This thick layer effectively covers up all scratches. Unfortunately, these systems can get pricey and can be time-consuming with many steps. You will not be able to use the surface for at least a week—not even gently. Alternatively, acrylic paints are your other option. Urethane-reinforced products are more expensive than ordinary acrylic-latex paints you would use on drywall.
The urethane will help hide deep scratches better and stick to problem surfaces. INSL-X Cabinet Coat is designed to adhere to plastic, metal, and urethane surfaces without a primer, but laminate and melamine surfaces will still need sanding before painting. If you choose to go the route of using a flash-bond acrylic primer, you can forego the sanding but will need to use two coats of satin or semi-gloss enamel paint and two coats of clear acrylic sealer.
