He was the brother of Numitor, the king of the pre-Roman city of Alba Longa. Amulius usurped the throne from his brother and later ordered the killing of Romulus and Remus, the twin brothers who would found Rome. There are several accounts of the legend, with some characters and exact events varying, with the one told here is one of the most popular.
Numitor and Amulius were born in that order to Procas, a descendant of the Trojan hero Aeneas, sometime in the 9th century BC. After Procas' death in BC, Numitor, the oldest son, became king. However, the envious Amulius usurped the throne, becoming the new king. Rhea was thrown into prison and her sons ordered to be thrown into the river Tiber.
The twins washed up onto dry land and were found by a she-wolf who suckled them. Later their mother was saved by the river god Tiberinus who ended up marrying her. He regretted it, and took Remus to Amulius's palace, and buried him there. When Romulus built a city wall, Remus jumped over it and was killed by his brother.
Romulus consolidated his power, and the city was named for him. Remus first saw six auspicious birds but soon afterward Romulus saw 12, and claimed to have won divine approval. The new dispute furthered the contention between them. In the aftermath, Remus was killed either by Romulus or by one of his supporters.
Romulus was Rome's legendary first king and the city's founder. After founding and naming Rome, as the story goes, he permitted men of all classes to come to Rome as citizens, including slaves and freemen, without distinction. Eventually, they were discovered and cared for by a shepherd and his wife : Faustulus and Acca Larentia. The origin of the city's name is thought to be that of the reputed founder and first ruler, the legendary Romulus. The brothers argued, Romulus killed Remus, and then named the city Rome after himself.
Vestal Virgins, in Roman religion, six priestesses , representing the daughters of the royal house, who tended the state cult of Vesta, the goddess of the hearth.
Later their mother was saved by the river god Tiberinus who ended up marrying her. Romulus and Remus went on to found Rome and overthrow Amulius, reinstating their grandfather Numitor as king of Alba Longa.
