But, cheetahs can live successfully in agricultural areas if farmers and ranchers can value cheetahs by learning their natural behaviors. Cheetahs are best known for living in the grasslands of East Africa , in vast national parks like the Serengeti or Masai Mara. However, cheetahs can range throughout any open country, from savannah to scrubland to desert, wherever there is adequate prey for them to survive.
Today the Southwestern African country of Namibia is home to one of the largest populations of cheetah in all of Africa. Namibia is a desert country, and much like America 's southwest, cattle and sheep ranching are the principle agricultural efforts. As a result, cheetahs are thought to be in direct conflict with ranchers and are exterminated in high numbers.
In fact, the Namibian cheetah population has declined by half in the last ten years. Still, an excellent opportunity exists to develop progressive conservation strategies for this endangered cat. There is a difference in preference of prey between males and females in this area. Males opt for open savannah because they prefer large prey since they hunt in coalitions, while females who prefer small prey such as impala mostly live around woodlands.
Generally, the cheetah prefers open but bushy areas which provide them some cover to stalk their prey and minimizes encounters with larger carnivores.
The lowest population is in the Sahara in Northern and Western Africa. Previously, the cheetah occurred widely in Asia as from the Mediterranean and the Arabian Peninsula in the west, India in the east, and the Caspian and Aral Seas in the North. Unfortunately, the population has diminished from the majority of its historic range and now occur in Iran and few areas in Afghanistan, India, and Turkmenistan.
The animal became extinct in Europe. Whilst they do not like montane ecosystems, they prefer elevated regions. This animal is an endangered species. For the most part, these animals are now found only either in eastern Africa, around the border between southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, or in southern Africa primarily northern Namibia, Botswana, and western Zambia. Outside Africa, there is only a small, critically endangered population in northeastern Iran.
