How tall to cut grass

You should only lower the height if this will not stress the mower; therefore the grass should not be too long or wet. Sometimes, particularly if the lawn is dense, you may need to do a cut on your present setting followed by a cut at the lower height a day or two later.

The grass leaf grows from the central crown on a stem. The stem may not be green but rather a straw colour so that when you mow long grass or when you lower the height you are removing more leaf the green part than usual thus exposing the stem. This will ensure that the grass grows straight and tall. While clippings can seem a bit unsightly on a lawn, they are actually very good for plant health.

They prevent weeds from popping up and provide important nitrogen and other nutrients to the newly cut grass. If you do still decide to bag the clippings, consider composting them and then using the compost to fertilize your own yard once every year.

You may not think of this, but lawn health and environmental health have direct links to lawn height. Letting your lawn grow taller is not only good for the grass itself and the root system, but it also supports the ecosystem in your yard.

Longer grass offers the following benefits:. Deep roots that form by letting grass grow a bit longer will help sustain a healthy lawn. A dull mower blade rips and shreds the grass leaf making the plant susceptible to disease. Mowing with a dull blade can lead to turf discoloration. A good rule of thumb is to sharpen your blade every ten mower hours. Buy an extra blade and keep a sharp spare handy. Avoid mowing your lawn when it is wet.

There are several reasons for not mowing a wet lawn. In addition to possibly jamming the mower blades and clogging the discharge chute, it also leaves clumps of grass on the lawn. Grass collecting on the mower blades also results in tearing the grass much like a dull blade. Before overseeding, verticutting or core aerating we recommend a low mow. Set your mowing height down one or two notches lower than your normal mowing height.

This low mow will allow new baby grass to collect sunlight and not be shaded by taller existing grass blades. Mow your grass as needed, returning the mower to your routine mowing height. Overseeding requires fertilizing and watering. Existing grass plants will be outgrowing the newly germinating grass seeds. How high should you cut the grass when you mow? Well, there is a general rule of thumb for determining what the grass height should be on your lawn.

It is especially recommended that you stick to this rule of thumb in fall and, to a lesser degree, in spring, but see below. In summer, meanwhile, if can't remember the measurements, err on the side of mowing at a greater height. It is not a bad idea, in fact, to choose one of the higher settings on your lawn mower wheels when the weather starts getting really hot, and just mow at that height until we approach the fall season and the weather starts to cool off a bit.

Well, what you are striving for is a balance. On the one hand, mowing the grass is like "pinching" a garden plant to stimulate rugged growth. So if you are letting the grass get tall, you are not mowing very much, which means you are passing up opportunities to stimulate good grass growth and make your lawn healthier and more attractive. But if you cut grass too short known as "scalping," for obvious reasons , you stress it. Take note that it is the height that the grass has attained that should determine when it is time to mow: it is your lawn's way of giving you a cue straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak.

It would be arbitrary to establish a schedule for mowing based on length of time between mowings. For instance, advising someone to "mow every other week" fails to take into account the growing conditions during that period of time.
